1 WLE Decides 2014! The Debate

2 WLE Decides 2014 The resolution debated: Ecosystem based approaches are the only way to feed the growing population and sustain the environment. CGIAR should adopt it in the years to come.

3 The Rules  Chatham house rules “When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.”information Allows for open debate on public policy and ensures that those speaking are not reprimanded or held to account for any opinions spoken during the debate We have added a new rule: Everyone except the documenters – must close his/her computers, cell phones and iPads during the debate (and hopefully the meeting)  The two teams will debate the main topic, a number of sub-topics and entertain questions from the floor  At the end, WLE Delegates will be asked to vote on the resolution

4 UNITING AGRICULTURE AND NATURE FOR POVERTY REDUCTION The resolution debated: Ecosystem based approaches are the only way to feed the growing population and sustain the environment. CGIAR should adopt it in the years to come.  Round 1: Opening statements  Round 2: Agriculture is the major driver of negative global processes (e.g. biodiversity loss, climate change). It also, naturally, ensures food security. Is it realistic to think that intensification of agriculture can arrest environmental degradation, let alone enhance ecosystem services?  Round 3: Allowing women equal access to resources and markets may lead to a 20-30% increase of productivity. This will result in some 4% increase in agriculture production in the developing world. Is there a need to focus on closing the gender gap?  Round 4: Can an ecosystem based approach include climate smart agriculture? If yes - is there a need for two CRPs, one related to climate change and another connected to water, land and ecosystems?  Round 5: Questions from the floor  Round 6: Concluding statements
