3 Disclaimer! The French and Indian War was not between the French and the Indians (or Native Americans). The French and Indian War was between the French and British, with help from colonial leaders and Native Americans.

4 The French and Indian War Begins! The British and the French controlled land in North America. Britain begins to moved west, into the Ohio River Valley. Britain send a militia, led by Washington to order the French to leave.

5 The French and Indian War Begins! The British and the French began to build forts in the Ohio River Valley. French: Fort Duquesne British: Fort Necessity

6 The Albany Congress Expecting a war, the British government calls a meeting of colonial leaders.  Plan for the colonies to defend themselves against the French.  Hoped to form an alliance with the Iroquois.  Alliance – an agreement between nations or groups to help each other.  The Iroquois refused  they expected the French to win.

7 The Albany Congress Plan by Benjamin Franklin:  Representative from each colony  Tax and form army  Control westward expansion Colonies rejected this plan.

9 Early British Defeats The British loses many early battles:  Fort Duquesne (failed attack)  Fort Necessity (forced to surrender)  Fort Niagara (failed attack)  Lake George (ambushed)

10 The British Turn the Tide William Pitt became Prime Minister in Britain British captured:  Fort Louisbourg  Fort Duquesne (renamed Fort Pitt) Iroquois then sides with the British Battle of Quebec France lost Treaty of Paris signed: 1. France cedes (surrenders) 2. France loses most land in North America 3. Britain moves west 4. Britain gets Florida
