2 Context – The occasion or the time and place a text was written or spoken. Purpose – The goal that the speaker or writer wants to achieve. Subject – What is the main subject, and what are the claims being made about the subject. Speaker – Who is the speaker or writer and what are their qualifications. Audience – Who was intended to hear or read the text. Persona – What character was the speaker trying to create for themselves.

3 Ethos – Appeals to character and shared values to demonstrate credibility. Typically, gives the audience a reason for listening (expertise of knowledge, training, sincerity, etc.) Automatic ethos. Logos – Appeals to the logic or reason. May be established through specific details, examples, facts, and the counterargument Pathos – Appeals to the emotions. Can have strong connotations, vivid descriptions, figurative language. Generally propagandistic rather than persuasive.
