2 Warm up #1 You and a group of friends are trying to measure how many jellybeans will fit in an empty peanut butter jar. You find that 738 fit in your jar. Friend #1 finds that 1135 fit in his jar, and friend #2 finds that 1304 fit into her jar. According to your teacher (who is never wrong!) the answer should be “about 900”. Are your group’s measurements precise? Why or why not? No: the range is greater than 1 Are they accurate? Why or why not? No: the average is off by more than 1

3 The last of the sig fig notes! Calculations with significant figures: When multiplying or dividing, your answer can contain no more significant figures than the least accurate measurement. Example: 56.78 cm x 2.45cm = Which number has the LEAST significant figures? How many sig figs does it have? 3 Your answer = 139 cm 2 (3 sig figs)

4 Adding and Subtracting sig figs Your answer can have no more DECIMAL places than the number with the least amount of DECIMAL places Ex: 123.56 + 22.1 – 15.853= Which one has the fewest decimal places? Your answer can only have 1 digit after the decimal Ans: 129.807 Final answer: 129.8
