2 Rotary is an International Organization u There are 531 districts in over 200 countries & geographical areas throughout the world. Membership is over 1.2 million. u Our club, Medicine Hat - Sunrise is in District #5360 which is comprised of 53 clubs and over 2,350 members. u The district covers Southern Alberta (Ponoka and south), & South and Western Saskatchewan.

4 In the beginning… u The first Rotary club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris. Rotary Founder Paul Harris u The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary. u There are approximately 1.2 million members in over 34,500 clubs worldwide.

5 Service Above Self u Rotary was not long to recognize that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose. u The first service project was public restrooms in downtown Chicago, IL, USA. u Rotary became the world’s first service club.

7 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise History u Chartered June 5, 1998 – 24 members by the Medicine Hat Club. u Membership 2015 – 30 members u Our Club represents business and professional members of the community who lend their many attributes and talents u The active, fun & energetic membership remain very committed to strong community involvement

8 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise Projects u Our club believes in projects (past and present) that include: –Recognition: F Sunrise Rotary Trails and Trees (MH College) F Sunrise Rotary Ride the Road to Reading Project F The Rotary Rescue Helicopter (MedicAir – H. A. L. O.) F Rotary Track & Field Site F Friends of Medalta Society – National Historic Site & Museum

9 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise Projects u Our club believes in projects that include: Mexican Schools Project Lifeline Haiti The Shelter Box Program Phoenix Safe House (MH Women's’ Shelter) Salvation Army Christmas Kettles The Santa Claus Fund And many others

10 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise Projects u Our club believes in projects that include: –Financial Support F Community Non Profit Organizations F Individuals/Groups in Need F Youth, Family and Community Focus

11 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise Projects Major fundraisers are: u Annual Fall Fundraiser - tbd u Stampede Raffle Booth (late July annually) u International Dinner/Mexican Fiesta (early Spring annually) u Casinos (approx. every 14 – 18 months in AGLC rotation)

13 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise International Projects u With the assistance of The Rotary Foundation, the Gov’t of Canada and the Gov’t of Alberta we have been able to assist many international projects to assist our neighbours. –Projects include: F Building Schools in Mexico F Lifeline Haiti F Project Shelter Box

14 Paul Harris Fellows and Benefactors u Many Sunrise Rotarians and spouses are benefactors of the Permanent Fund. u Methods of donating include: – monthly by PAC –or annually (E. R. E. Y.) –Craig would be happy to show you how!

15 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat – Sunrise Exchanges u Group Study Exchanges –Teams of one Rotarian leader and four non- Rotarian business or professional young people visit our district to experience their profession in a new culture. –Visits are up to six weeks. –Sunrise Rotarians co-hosted a visiting teams from Scotland (2009).

16 The Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise Exchanges u Rotary Youth Exchange Program –16-18 year olds are exchanged world-wide. –7,000 students participate worldwide. –Our club hosts the student for one year. –Rotarians host these young people in their homes for three to four months. –Students become part of the family.

17 Object of Rotary u The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.

18 Object of Rotary u First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; u Second. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his or her occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

19 Object of Rotary u Third. The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his or her personal, business and community life; u Fourth. The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace through a world of fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

20 We implement the Object of Rotary through the Four Avenues of Service

21 Club Service Those things that a Rotarian does to help make the running of the local club successful. Vocational Service The promoting of the “ideal of service” throughout the business and professional world. Community Service E very Rotarian is urged to participate in activities that make the community a better place in which to live. International Service Encourages and fosters the advancement of understanding and good will among people of the world

22 Board of Directors The Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat - Sunrise are the club President:Milvia Bauman President-elect:Dan Kammerer Past President:Keith Walker SecretaryLes Scholly TreasurerBill Cooper plus the Directors of each of the Services of Rotary A new board is elected to take office on 1 July of each year. All positions in Rotary are one year terms (Committee Chairs 2 years) that change on 1 July.

23 THE FOUR-WAY TEST of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

24 The Privileges in Rotary u The privilege of FRIENDSHIP WITH LEADERS: –in your community –in neighboring towns and villages –throughout Canada –around the World

25 The Privileges in Rotary u The privilege of GIVING SERVICE to your community. u The privilege of DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL GOODWILL and understanding. u The privilege of helping BUILD HIGHER ETHICAL STANDARDS within your vocation through the common bond of Rotary.

26 Your Obligations in Rotary Participation u To be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents: –in community work –in fellowship and social functions –in club and district activities

27 Your Obligations in Rotary Volunteer and Club Activities You will be assigned to a Committee – active participation is needed You will be asked to Volunteer for all Club activities eg. SA Kettle Bells, Dictionary Deliveries, etc. You will be scheduled on the Club Duty Roster or Meeting Cashier schedule for rotating duties

28 Your Obligations in Rotary Attendance u There is a directory available on the Rotary International web site. Visit a club while on vacation or during a business trip. You will immediately be introduced to a room full of friends who want to make your visit to the area enjoyable. Our members have visited clubs all around the world (check out our banners/flags at the desk for every meeting).

29 Your Financial Obligations u It can easily cost up to $1,000 per year F Annual Dues $225/year F Meals $ 10/week F Club 50/50 Draw $ 2/week F Social Events $200/year F Rotary Foundation $100/year F And of course Sergeant at Arms “fines” & Happy Dollars
