3 Decision Making  As you get older you will be required to make more and more decisions that are more and more complicated.  It is important to learn the skill on how to make a decision on your own without being influenced b others.

4 Decision Making  Take out a piece of paper.  Write down 4 or 5 decisions that you made in the following categories: At home In school With friends

5 Decision Making  Is this a decision you made on your own?  What are some other sources that help influence their decisions?

6 Decision Making  Points to make. –We are involved with decision making everyday. Some decision are made without much thought and some require more time and conscience effort. –Many decisions we make are influence by other people.

7 Difficult Decisions  What is the most difficult decision you recently made?  How did you go about making the decision and who influenced you in your final choice?

8 Making Better Decisions  There are three different type of decisions: –Simple choices like vanilla or chocolate ice cream. –Everyday decisions- what to wear, home much to study, what time to go home. –Major Decisions – to be made carefully thinking about the possible consequences or outcomes of different decisions.

9 The 3 Cs of Decision Making  Clarify the decision to be made (what is the decision you need to make).

10 The 3 Cs of Decision Making  Consider the possible alternatives (think about the different things you might decide to do and the consequences of choosing each alternative; collect any additional information as needed. (If you are trying to solve a problem think up as many solutions as possible).  Choose the best alternative and take the necessary action. Be sure to follow through on your decision.

11 Decision Making Practice  Student Guide Page 19.  Clarify the problem for both Scenarios. –Clarify is defined as specifically what is the decision that needs to be made. –Situation 1 Do I do my homework or cheat and go to the game? –Situation 2 Do I drink beer or not?

12 Decision Making Practice  Consider the possible alternatives and the consequences.  Scenario 1.  Scenario 2.

13 Decision Making Practice  Choose the best alternative and take the necessary action.

14 Group Pressure and Decision Making  To what extent do you think you decisions are influenced by other people?  For example If some friends told you that you look good in blue, how would this affect the color that you wear?

15 Practice Exercise  Please place in order the three lines in terms of decreasing length. (e.g. which is the longest line, which is the next longest line, which is the longest line?)

16 Practice Exercise  What is the correct order?  There is no correct order, all the lines are of equal length.

17 Point to Make  Pressure from the group to which we belong often influences our decision?  Have you ever made a decision to go along with the group as a result of group pressure?  Why are people influenced so much by other people?

18 Point to Make  We are often influenced by group members because everyone generally wants to be accepted by the group and not be considered to be an outcast.
