DO I HAVE A CONFLICT OF INTEREST? Based on the “Conflict of Interest Wheel”

A conflict of interest refers to a conflict between your official University duties, and your private interests and personal relationships, where those interests or relationships could influence (or be perceived to influence) the way in which you carry out your duties for the University.

While it is your responsibility to avoid conflicts of interest, that is not always possible. A conflict situation must always be declared and then managed.

As soon as you become aware a conflict of interest exists, DECLARE the conflict to your supervisor, SEEK ADVICE, and then MANAGE the situation in a transparent and ethical manner.

EMPLOYMENT AND CONTRACTORS ASK Is my decision to employ or contract someone influenced by my personal relationship with them, or someone they know? THINK How might others perceive my actions even if I think I am acting impartially? Am I “doing someone a favour”?? ACT Declare the relationship and remove myself from the process.

STUDENTS ASK Will my relationship with a student influence my teaching and assessment of them? THINK Could I be perceived to be treating them more favourably or unfairly than other students? ACT Declare the relationship and make alternative arrangements.

RESEARCH ASK Will my personal relationship or interest with a funding body affect my research focus and outcomes? THINK Is there the possibility that my research credibility or ethics, or those of the University, will be placed at risk? ACT Declare the relationship or interest and follow the Research Code of Practice.

FINANCE ASK Is my decision influenced by a personal relationship or will I or anyone associated with me derive any benefit from this transaction? THINK Would my action meet the standards of audit or external scrutiny? ACT Declare the interest and remove myself from the process.

GIFTS ASK Does the gift benefit me rather than the University? Could there be an expectation of preferential treatment attached? THINK How might I feel in future situations dealing with the person who gave me the gift? ACT Decline the offer, declare the approach and seek advice.

OTHER INTERESTS ASK Do I have other interests or involvements that may affect the way I carry out my role at the University? THINK Would I feel confident explaining my interests if they were scrutinised for any reason? ACT Declare the interest in advance, seek advice and manage or relinquish the interest.
