PHOTO REVIEW

YOUR CAMERA SLR- Single Lens Reflex Uses 35mm film You view, compose, focus and take a photo through a single lens SLR redirects the light from the lens to your eye with a reflex mirror, focusing screen, pentaprism and viewfinder

35mm black and white film (1”x 1 ½”) Film layers Protective layer- helps prevent scratching Emulsion layer- chemical compound of light sensitive silver halide crystals suspended in gelatin Antihalation layer- promotes sharpness Plastic base- support Film SPEED ISO (international standards organization rating) Is the measurement of how sensitive a film is to light. Fast film- highly sensitive to light- more grain- larger particles Slow film- lower sensitivity to light- less grain- smaller particles ISO 50- slow- ISO 100, 125, 200- medium ISO 400- fast ISO 1600-3200- ultrafast * When film in developed the silver halide crystals that were exposed to light form small black clumps of metallic silver- GRAIN

TWO THINGS EFFECT HOW MUCH LIGHT HITS YOUR FILM

The Lens Aperture is controlled by a series of blades that can be opened or closed to let in more or less light. The relative size of the of the opening is indicated by its f stop number. The LARGER the number the SMALLER the hole. One whole f stop change you let in half as much or twice as much light depending if you open up or close down. There are also half stops. Aperture controls your depth of field The small lens aperture you use the greater the depth of field

Depth of field refers to the depth of the zone that is visibly sharp in an image. Lens aperture Distance to subject- The greater the distance from camera to subject the greater the depth of field Len focal length- the shorter the focal length of the lens, the greater the DOF.

Typically all cameras offer shutter speeds in fractions of a second from slow to fast ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000

Panning- moving the camera during exposure in the same direction as the sublects motions Camera Shake- any deliberate or accidental camera movement causing image blur Can be caused from your shutter speed being too low GENERAL RULE: Don’t use shutter speeds slower that 1/30 or 1/60 when handholding TRIPOD or Bracing!!

Exposure factors: Subject Lighting- dim light? You need to let more light into the camera bright light? You need to let less light into the camera Lens Aperture Shutter Speed Film Speed Well exposed negatives make the best prints A dark negative is known as dense A light negative is known as thin F-stop and Shutter speed have a reciprocal relationship- by adjusting one setting in a particular direction, while adjusting the other by the same amount in the opposite direction you keep the total quantity of light striking the film the same!
