2  Day nursery: 6 months to 4 years old  PRIMARY : Kindergarten 4-6 years old : Elementary 6-12 years old  SECONDARY: Gymnasium (junior high) 12-15 : Lyceum (senior high) 15-18  University : 4 – 6 years

3  School life starts in Greece since parents are obliged to enroll their children in the Kindergarten, at the age of 5. The Greek kindergarten consists of two grades 4-5 & 5-6 usually in a mixed class.  Children from 1.5 – 4 years may attend the Day nursery: a pedagogical ly organized environment, under the Ministry of Health and Welfare  All the other schools are under the Ministry of Education

4  Nursery School The goal of the Nursery school is to support and strengthen the education and the socialization process. The aim is to reinforce the psychokinetic, social, emotional, intellectual and moral development of young children, both at personal and group level. The focus is on the aesthetic dimension, mental development and the overall development of motor and intellectual skills. Besides, special Nurseries are available for children with special education needs.

5  Children attend Kindergarten for two years, from the age of four to six, as a preparatory stage for the Primary school.  There are both public and private day nurseries and kindergartens not only in big cities but in small towns too.

6  ‘Demotiko’ is the elementary school and with the Kindergarten consist the Primary Level. Greek pupils enter the elementary school at the age of six. A school year consists of three semesters and the students evaluation is:  3 rd 4rth: with letters: A,B,C  5 th 6 th : with marks from 0 to 10.  In Private elementary in big cities, the curriculum provides PC lessons, Art and theatre.

7  Gymnasium (junior high school) is the first level of secondary education, and the last obligatory one. Each year requires qualification in final exams  Students are evaluated with marks from 0 to 20.

8  After the compulsory 9 years of general education and receiving the School Leaving Certificate, Students have 2 options: Lyceum Technical Lyceum

9  In the first grade of Lyceum, all students attend the same subjects. School exams exist like in the junior high school.  In the second grade students need to choose one direction of subjects that correspond to their future preference of the University.  Ending the third grade national exams are held and that determines which University students will go to.

10  This is an option among students who do not want to deal with the “heavy” subjects of the Lyceum, and wish to obtain a specialty after completing the attendance.  The attendance of this Schools also lasts 3 years. Includes some common subjects with the Lyceum since the 1st grade. During the 2nd grade, students need to choose 2 specialty relative subjects, depending on the local school’s availability.

11  is a branch of secondary education that offers the opportunity to attend a sole cycle of subjects corresponding to a specific profession such as Car Engineering, Plumbing, Electrics, Refrigerant.  School exams are needed in order to attend state university

12  The higher education is divided in to 5 groups: Universities Polytechnics Health Sciences Economics Military Schools.

13  Public higher education is divided into Higher Educational Institutions and Technological Educational Institutions. Students are admitted in these institutions depending on their performance in national examinations taken in the third grade of lyceum..
