4 How Effective Do You Think You Are as a Presenter? 1.Before you actually planned a presentation would you decide on your basic objective(s)? 2.Would you analyze your audience beforehand? 3.Would your presentation include a preview and review? 4.Would you try to make your introduction and ending as sensational as possible? 5.Would you try to make sure that your visual aids were clear, simple, easy to read and useful? 6.Would you try and be as enthusiastic as possible? 7.Would you rehearse thoroughly? 8.Would you rely a great deal on your notes? 9.Would your notes only contain keywords or phrases? 10.Would you check out the seating, AV equipment, lighting, etc., beforehand? 11.Would you maintain eye contact with your audience? 12.Would you use your normal voice? 13.Would you be aware of your own body language? 14.Would you use humor? 15.Would you care about what clothes you had on? 16.Would you read from your notes? 17.Would you be worried if your audience looked bored? 18.Would you be constantly worried about making language mistakes? 19.Would you feel safer talking from behind something, e.g. a table? 20.Would you feel what you were saying was far more important than how you said it?

Do you think he decided on the basic objective beforehand? Do you think he analyzed the audience beforehand? Did his presentation include a preview and a review?

6 About Speech 1 Informative Speech Individual assignment Tuesday Sept. 30 th & Wednesday Oct. 1 st 3-4 1/2 minutes (maximum)

7 What is an Informative Speech Provides information about a specific subject Informative speeches usually: Describe an activity, event, object person, or place Demonstrate an event or activity Explain abstract or complicated subjects or issues Make sure the topic is narrow enough to be thoroughly presented

8 Specific Purpose and Thesis Statement Specific purpose: Your speech’s goal, stated in a complete sentence “I want to explain why everyone in the class should read “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Thesis statement: Complete sentence that expresses the speaker’s most important idea, or key point, about a topic. A thesis statement guides the development of a speech “To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent book to read because it features interesting characters, thought provoking issues, and an exciting plot.
