Waves Mr. Ford

Types of Waves Wave a disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space Medium the matter which a wave travels through Mechanical wave a wave that requires a medium to travel through. (can be transverse or longitudinal) Electromagnetic wave a wave caused by a disturbance in electric and magnetic fields and that does not require a medium; also called a light wave

Transverse waves a wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate perpendicularly to the direction the wave travels

Longitudinal (compression) wave a wave that causes the particles of the medium to vibrate parallel to the direction the wave travels

Surface waves occur at the boundary between two different mediums (ex. water and air). Particles in a surface wave move in a circular motion.

Check Your Understanding 1.Identify the medium for the following waves: a.Ripples on a pond b.The sound waves from a stereo speaker c.Seismic waves (earthquake) 2.Name one kind of wave that does not require a medium 2.Explain the difference between transverse waves and longitudinal waves. Give an example of each. 3.Describe the motion of a water molecule on the surface of the ocean as a wave passes by. 2.Describe a situation that demonstrates that water waves carry energy.
