2 RIVALRY IN THE NORTHWEST  Adams-Onis Treaty  In 1819, Secretary of State John Q. Adams convinced Spain to set border at what is now California and give up all claim to Oregon  In 1824, Russia also gave up claims to the land South of Alaska  Britain and the U.S. jointly occupied region  Mountain Men  Thrived under John Astor’s Fur Company in Rockies

3 OREGON AND MANIFEST DESTINY  Along the Oregon Trail  American pioneers that settled the region called “emigrants”  In 1843, about 1,000 made the journey  Manifest Destiny  Many believed it was the nation’s mission and responsibility to spread democracy and Christianity across the continent  “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight”  President James Polk’s slogan for northern border of Oregon  In 1846, Britain and U.S. compromised and border set at 49 degrees

4 FLORIDA  In 1837 Florida’s census reported enough people to apply for statehood  Slaves made up half the state’s population  Florida emerged as a slave state after the admittance of Iowa joining as a free state  President John Tyler signed Florida as the 27 th state on March 3 rd, 1845  It allowed the number of slave and free states t remain equal in Congress

5 TEXAS  In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain  Americans rushed to Texas with the new govt. welcoming the new settlers  In 1830, Mexico issued a decree closing its borders to outsiders because many Americans refused to follow rules-being Catholic, speaking Spanish, etc.  In 1835, Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna moved to punish the rebels, Sam Houston and Stephen Austin

6 THE ALAMO  The Texans had about 180 soldiers to take on Santa Anna’s 70,000  Texans included Davy Crockett, commander William Travis, and Jim Bowie  For 13 days the Texans held off  On March 13, 1836, Mexican cannons smashed through the Alamo’s walls  Very few Tejanos survived  “Remember the Alamo”

7 TEXAS DECLARES INDEPENDENCE  On March 2, 1836, Texas declared independence from Mexico-The Republic of Texas  On May 14, 1836, Santa Anna-who was eventually captured on April 21 st, recognized the independence of Texas  In September 1836, Sam Houston sent a delegation to Washington DC to ask to be annexed  Andrew Jackson refused the request  In 1845, James K. Polk signed Texas into statehood
