Reading New Reading Workshop! Daily 10 minute mini- lesson focused on: Comprehension- within, beyond, about the text Thinking skills Vocabulary strategies Independent Reading (45 minutes)- at individual reading level Teachers confer with small groups and individuals Writing about reading How you can help: Encourage your child to read a book at their reading level for at least 30 minutes each night Have your child read aloud to you or a sibling Read a more challenging book together! Supporting ALL learners Levels of support Below level: extra support for 30 minutes per day, small groups, DreamBox, individual conferencing On level: whole group assignment, some small group support, individual conferencing Above level: challenging texts, individual conferences, challenging math problems We begin the year by assessing all students to identify their current reading and math levels.

Our Parent-Teacher-Student Compact says: Student success is best supported when the student, parent/guardian, and school work together. Each member of the school community has specific things to do that help students achieve at high levels. We know our students have to agree to come to school, work hard, and follow the Hornet Expectations. Families will receive copies of the Parent-Teacher-Student Compact at November conferences.

Music with Mrs. Colton 45 minutes, twice a week (35 minutes on Friday) Students will participate in one grade-level concert during the year Physical Education with Mr. Knutsen and Mr. Williams 45 minutes, twice a week Students should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothing on P.E. days Library with Ms. Novotny 45 minutes, once a week Please help your child remember to return books on their library day November 10: 1 st grade Veterans’ Day assembly December 17: All grades winter sing along January 15: 2 nd grade MLK assembly February 27: Music in Our Schools kick off March 30: 3 rd grade evening concert March 30: 4 th grade evening concert

Homework Expectations Student responsibilities: 30 minutes reading per night (complete reading log) Weekly math packet (due Mondays) Nightly Fact Fluency practice (worksheet) 5 th Grade only: Monthly Math Problems Optional: DreamBox, IXL Check Homework Planner nightly for additional notes/assignments Purpose: Review of previously learned skills, increase personal responsibility Family support: Provide a quiet space (and time) for work completion Make sure work isn’t taking more than 45-60 minutes maximum Contact me if this is an issue Read with child when possible Encourage child to check for work quality Review Homework Planner and Behavior Reflection weekly

Phone calls, notes, emails are welcome! Appointments at least 1 day in advance for meetings November conferences Keep me posted of any changes you see at home with your child; you’re the expert!

Parent involvement opportunities PTA (meetings, events, etc.) They could really use your help! Please sign up today! Field Trip Chaperones October 21 to Cedar River Watershed in Renton! Especially 5 th grade camp in May! In-class events (Author’s Chair, Math Day, etc) Please fill out Washington State Patrol form at front office! Anything you’d love to share with the class? Let me know!

Tidbits Once per month birthday celebrations (first Friday) Please send water bottles! Limit tardies and absences Learning begins at 8:35! Healthy snacks only (can you send some to share?) Free/Reduced Lunch (fill out even if your child brings a lunch from home. It helps our school get funding!) Marathon Club (your kid should do it!) Field trips Cedar river watershed in fall (10/21) Guest speakers 5 th Grade Camp (May)
