2  The Japanese Empire was at war with China throughout the 1930’s.  In the late 1930’s, the United States began to put embargos on scrap steel and oil to Japan.  Hoped to force the Japanese to leave China without war.  The United States was following a plan of ISOLATIONISM (Staying out of the affairs of the rest of the world)

3  The Japanese were angry about not being able to purchase scrap metal from the United States.  It slowed their military production  The Japanese began to plan to get the needed resources from the Pacific nations and islands.  Indonesia – oil  Southeast Asia – Rubber  China - Metals

5  The United States wanted to use diplomacy to get the Japanese out of China.  United States moves US Navy from California to Hawaii  Japanese considered this a threat.  Japan’s military government wanted to get the United States and Europeans out of the Pacific forever.  Japan planned to attack the U.S. Fleet at Pearl Harbor

6  Japanese hold war games and practice the attack for months!  Diplomacy was going on until November 27 th, 1941.  The Japanese fleet was at sea moving toward Pearl harbor at the same time….

19 Japanese Losses  4 Aircraft Carriers  275 planes, 2,400 men  2 or 3battleships damaged  2 Heavy Cruisers sunk  3 more damaged  1light cruiser damaged  3 or 4 destroyers sunk  Estimated total number of personnel lost: 4,800. U.S. Navy Losses  1 Aircraft carrier - Yorktown  1 Destroyer sunk.  150 aircraft lost in action or damaged  Personnel:  92 officers  215 men.
