3 U.S./Japanese Relations  Relations were already strained between the two countries…Japanese aggression on China (Manchuria), U.S. support of China  Japan was part of Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy  U.S. cut off supplies to Japan and began strengthening military power in the Pacific  Continued attempts were made to come to an agreement between the two countries, but to no avail…the Japanese cut off talks with the U.S.  On December 7 th, 1941…

4 The attack begins…  7:55 the attack begins  Japanese:  4 aircraft carriers  4 cruisers (2 heavy, 2 light)  35 subs  9 oilers  2 battleships  11 destroyers  1 st wave: 183 aircraft  2 nd wave: 170 aircraft

5 Surprise?  How could an attack like this be a surprise?  Radar operator noticed a large number of planes, but was told by an officer that the planes were B- 17’s returning from the mainland  Warnings from Washington weren’t taken seriously  Submarine sighting and sinking off the coast of Oahu wasn’t relayed quickly.  Servicemen were still sleeping off their Saturday night partying.

7 Outcome  Casualties: –Navy: 2008 killed, 710 wounded –Army: 218 killed, 364 wounded –Marines: 109 killed, 69 wounded –Civilians: 68 killed, 35 wounded –Total: Approx 2400 killed!!!!!!

8 Ships lost or damaged  Battleships: Arizona, Oklahoma (sunk)  Battleships: California, Maryland, Nevada, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania (sunk or damaged, but later repaired)  Destroyers damaged: 3  Cruisers damaged: 3  Minecraft damaged: 1  Auxiliaries: Utah (sunk), 4 others damaged and repaired

9 Aircraft lost  Navy: 92 lost, 31 damaged  Army: 77 lost, 128 damaged
