3  The middle-aged years between 40 and 65 are sometimes called the middlescence.  Many times adults will question their purpose and goals for living

4 The Effects of Change During Middlescence  Family Life Cycle Changes  Children leave home  Empty nest  Grandchildren  Parental Relationship Roles  May have to provide care and support for the aging parent  Changes Affecting Careers  Reaches the peak of careers  Feel threatened by younger employees

5 Midlife Crisis  Some adults have problems adjusting to the changes in the middle years  A midlife crisis is brought on by the stress from changes in the middle years of life  May wear teen fashions  May blame others for the loss of their youth (family)  May change jobs or careers

6 Grandparenting  A close and warm relationship with grandchildren are beneficial for grandparents and grandchildren  Provide love and Acceptance  Give Focused Attention to Grandchildren  Provide Child Care  Continuing Family Traditions  Provide some Financial Assistance

7 Benefits of Grandparenting  Provides a source of love and affection for aging adults  An opportunity for an older adult to feel needed and important  Provides a feeling of satisfaction

9  Retirement is the ending of paid employment  For most adults in our society this occurs around age 65

10 The Challenges of Retirement  Changes in Work Roles  May feel worthless and suffer from a loss of self- esteem  Volunteering can provide social contact  Financial Changes  Changes in Social Life

11 Planning an Active Retirement  Maintaining a Positive Attitude  Staying Healthy Through Diet and Physical Activity

12 Planning for Financial Needs  A workers paycheck stops at retirement, but living cost continue  Federal Programs  Social security is a federal program that is run by the Social Security Administration. You have to apply in person at the local social security office  Supplemental Security Income (SSI)  To help those over 65+, blind, or disable  Medicare

13 Pension Income  Pensions are funds paid by employers to former employees who contributed to a special retirement fund while they were employed

14  The Elderly Years 18:3

15 Physical Health  Adults between the ages of 60-75 are healthier than ever  Some physical changes that may occur is loss of vision and hearing  Dealing with the Effect of Aging  Proper diet and regular exercise are important for the elderly  Community Resources  Transportation, recreation and information

16 Changes in Social Life  As physical health decline so does social life  Most want to live in their own homes as long as possible

17 Protecting the Rights of the Elderly  They are prime targets for fraud  Consumer Fraud  Wanting a deal because of limited income  Many times not reported because they do not want to appear foolish or incompetent

18 Elder Abuse  Elder abuse refers to intentionally or knowingly causing the elder person to suffer physical harm or injury, unreasonable confinement, sexual abuse, or lack of services or medical treatment to maintain health  Material abuse means the misuse of the elder person’s property or financial resource

19 Community Resources for Providing Care  Adult Day Care is a program that transports older adults from their home to centers that provide daytime activities  Community-based day care is a program of activities for older people who are still somewhat independent.  Home health care may be a solution for the very elderly. Nurses or aides go to the elderly person’s home to provide assistance with health care

20 Death and Dying  Hospice care is designed to help a dying person live the final days of life in comfort  Coping with Death  The first stage of grieving bring feelings of emptiness and numbness  The second stage may bring feelings of being anxious, fearful and abandoned  People who have mourned the loss of a loved one will gradually accept the loss and adjust to living without that person
