ACTS 2:1-13 THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Witnesses to the World (Growing, Glowing, Going)

INTRODUCTION The Holy Spirit in the New Testament: Luke 1:15, 35; 3:22 John 14:17; 16:7, 13-14

MAIN IDEA Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians can proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, and people will believe and become a part of His body, the church.

Symbols of the Spirit’s Coming (1-4) God empowers His church for ministry through the coming of the Holy Spirit. A. The sound at Pentecost (1-2) B. The sight at Pentecost (3) C. The speech at Pentecost (4)

PRINCIPLE When people filled with the Holy Spirit proclaim the gospel, a supernatural ministry takes place.

Results of the Spirit’s Coming (5-13) Sometimes unbelievers make fun of Christians who act in ways God empowers them. A. The crowd (5-11) 1. The men (5) 2. The marvel (6-11)

B. The confusion (12-13) 1. “What can this mean?” (12) 2. “They’re drunk!” (13)

PRINCIPLES The languages which the apostles spoke differed, but their message remained the same: the wonderful works of God. People shocked by a supernatural phenomenon may choose to accept God’s hand at work, or they may turn away and chalk it up to something else.

ASSIGNMENT What is the difference between baptism and filling of the Holy Spirit?
