The Call to Worship Spirit of the living God, visit us again on this day of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit. With rushing wind that sweeps away all fear and doubt, Come, Holy Spirit.

With tongues of fire that set our hearts aflame in worship and adoration, Come, Holy Spirit. With speech that joyfully declares the glory of Jesus, the Saviour and Sovereign of the World, Come, Holy Spirit.

With love that overcomes the boundaries of race and people and nation, Come, Holy Spirit. With power from above to make the weak strong in Jesus’ Name, Come, Holy Spirit

The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit Pentecost

Acts 1. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptised with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.’

Acts 1. 7 He said to them: ‘It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’

Acts 2. 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Acts 2. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Acts 2. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Acts 2. 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 ‘“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Acts 2. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Acts 2. 38 Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off – for all whom the Lord our God will call.’

Prayer of Confession Our God, we come in humility, confessing our sin and weakness. We are often unresponsive for we are often afraid. Forgive us, O Lord

When your Spirit speaks, we often turn deaf ears, for we fear what you might call us to do. Forgive us, O Lord When your Spirit touches our lips, we often close our mouths, embarrassed to speak your Word. Forgive us, O Lord

When the wind of your Spirit blows, we often close the windows of our hearts, afraid you will disrupt our ordered lives. Forgive us, O Lord

When the fire of your Spirit touches us, we often quench the flame, choosing lukewarmness instead of the fullness of life you want to bring. Forgive us, O Lord
