5  By competing in the Olympic Games it has created a unity among the countries.  How does this place the Olympics compare to where we live?  By being a part of a team you must work together and learn to get along with other people.  The Olympic games are sports that people from all over the world compete against Enduring Understandings

7 These classroom games will be going on as the winter games are happening. This will serve as a current event for the students and also give the students time to explore the different events that occur during the Olympic Games. The students will have the chance to show off their own talents and be rewarded for doing so. This will be a fun and educational unit that guides the students in connection to their lives and the lives of others. Letters

9  Show a picture of bobsledding and (prompt) “is this a sport that you recognize?” ( if students know what it is ask what the goal of the sport is”) ( if not explain it is a sport that competes in the Olympics)  Bobsledding (“M” from D.M.A model)- the students will be given this handout to understand the sport of bobsledding and realize it is an Olympic sport. Lesson 1

10  Retell the story (prompt) “using the Olympic games assembly sheet” The teacher will let the students know about the different groups in Greece and assign a group to each.  Make sure that they students know these will be their “team names” and they will be competing also.  Banners- the students will be given a piece of paper to write their team name on and create a team mascot underneath each one of the signs tape the definitions of the group’s name. Lesson 2

11  Figure Skating- the students will be given a pair of socks each that will be put around their feet and secured with rubber bands. Tape will be placed on the ground to show the boarders of the “ice skating rink”. All students from their team must make up their own routine and dance for three minutes each.  The students will be judged by other faculty and staff to see the gold, silver and bronze winners. This will be given at the end of the day.  Podium- the students will be given the medals at the end of the day and have the chance to stand up on the podium just like an Olympian would do. Lesson 3

12 Lesson 4  Ice Hockey- the students will be given a pair of socks each that will be put around their feet and secured with rubber bands. Tape will be placed on the ground to show the boarders of the “ice skating rink”. All students from their team must compete against the other to make a goal.  The students will be judged by the teacher and will be given broom sticks to push a ball across the ice skating rink  Podium- the students will be given the medals at the end of the day and have the chance to stand up on the podium just like an Olympian would do.  Maps- (prompt) Handout the two different maps “here are the flags from each of the maps you see” these maps will guide the students see the distance from the United states to Russia. The flags are also shown so the students can see the similarities and differences of the United States flag.  Color flags- When going over the maps (prompt) “color the flag of the country on the correct map”

13  The History of the Olympic Games- (prompt) handout the paper and highlighters to students and read the entire paragraph to the students highlighting where it the answers would be.   Read aloud- listen to the read aloud and highlight the specific areas.  Closing Ceremony - the students participate in the closing ceremony. The national anthem will be sung and the students will listen. After the song the students will be introduced to the class again by the announcer “teacher”.  Parade- Each student will be given their personalized banner which they will hold up while parading around the room. When all students have paraded around and are seated explain the torch that had been lite at the beginning of the week that must be put out. Lesson 5

14 Summary  During the Olympic Games the students will watch videos and read literature on the history of the Olympic Games.  Learn about different places in the world  Understand the significance of the Olympics
