6. Overview of Edgar Allan Poe Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts His mother, Elizabeth Poe, died shortly after in 1811. Poe was taken in at the age of 2 by an affluent tobacco merchant and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. John Allan.affluent The Allan’s baptize Poe as Edgar Allan Poe on January 7, 1812. 7. Poe continued… In 1820 Poe returned to the United States. In 1826 he enrolled at the University of Virginia, where he became estranged from his foster father after accumulating gambling debts.estranged Unable to pay off his debts or support himself, Poe dropped out of school and joined the United States Army. 8. Poe continued… On May 16, 1836 Poe, age 27, marries his cousin Virginia Clemm. Clemm is thirteen. Virginia dies of tuberculosis in January 1847. Poe becomes very depressed and starts drinking heavily, leading to debt, illness, and ostracizing from society. ostracizing October 3, 1849, Poe is found unconscious on the streets of Baltimore.
