Assessment Driven Learning

Some Issues No state/central examinations upto grade 12 Children promoted to next grade irrespective of examination performance Children move upwards with gaps Large classes (40-50 students per class) High teacher contact sessions (30-40 sessions/week) Teachers teach to “test-prep”

Some Issues (contd.) Assessments give macro results - Not concept wise micro analysis Assessments post humus Personalisation not viable Longitudinal data not available Remedial often happens too late

The Project Through IBM Global Faculty Award

What we did : Divided all content (Class 3 to Class 12 – Maths, English, Science) into concepts based on NCERT books Developed digital content for each concept and multiple choice questions for three levels for each concept (e.g. class 5 maths has 27 concepts) Piloted the class 5 maths question paper in 6 schools (~ 600 students) Provided results to the teacher/school administration within 24hrs

What we did (contd.) Analysed results – student wise, section wise, concept wise Planned remedials (different approach in different schools) Remedials to be conducted by school teachers, by IIT faculty, by parents/tutor

Sample Size & Characteristics School 1 Sec A, Sec B, Sec C 138 students Class 6 Mathemati cs School 2 Sec A, Sec B, Sec C, Sec D 160 students Class 6 Maths School 3 Sec A, Sec B, Sec C, Sec D, Sec E, Sec F 120 students (top performers of Grade 5) Class 6 Maths Instruction medium in schools is English Located in cities (urban) Fee range Rs.1000-4000/- per month Second Generation or Third Generation Educated Families Sec B1, B2, C1 families Affiliated to CBSE/ICSE boards Total population of such schools will be ~ 15000

Assumptions Competence level of students in all sections in the three schools is same Topics covered in the three schools in Grade 6 is same The 3 schools have similar infrastructure, size & location The 3 schools are catering to students with a similar socio economic background

Average Performance in 3 Schools Scores out of 100 Average Score = sum of scores of all students/total number of students who appeared for the test

The next steps Will conduct IT based assessments every 4-6 weeks and provide data to the school Design and implement remedials Study relationship of student performance with - parents education and occupation/ home environment/ school location/ school factors/ peer group

The next steps (contd.) Analyse data to understand whether some concepts are difficult across schools See the inter-relatedness of concepts across subjects Understand as to how best can the teachers/ administrators use assessment data Understand the effectiveness of IT based digital learning
