10 UK Context Over the coming decade £250 billion will be invested in built environment infrastructure The 2020-Vision report on future UK construction identified key areas of growth as offsite construction, energy efficiency measures, infrastructure and ICT The UK CPA has indicated the construction sector will grow by £111 billion by 2017 Global Context Globally, construction is forecast to grow by 65% from £4.6 trillion in 2011 to £7.6 trillion in 2020 By 2020, construction will account for 13% of the World’s GDP with much of the activity focussed on Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe

11 Scottish Context 170,000 people -10% of all Scottish jobs 31,000 businesses GVA of £8.7 billion Top 10 Scottish construction firms had a total turnover of £2.2 billion and employed 6,000 people directly Unique role in building the infrastructure to support society and commerce and enable all other sectors to grow Scotland’s low carbon economic strategy cites construction, building technologies, energy-related retrofits, and waste reduction measures as priority market opportunities Building technologies and energy management sectors alone are forecast to support 15,000 jobs by 2020. The low carbon retrofit market for buildings is expected to be worth £400 million over the next 5 years The industry’s current strategy aims to grow GVA by £800 million by 2016 (£9.5 billion)
