2 WHAT IS ARTS AND COMMUNICATION? Arts and Communication has programs of study related to humanities, visual arts, performing arts, media arts, technical arts, and literary arts.

3 ART THERAPIST Responsibilities: Encourage their clients to express themselves through the use of a variety of artistic materials, such as paints, pastels, pencil crayons, markers, and clay. Explore clients’ emotions in non-threatening ways Education Needed: Bachelor’s degree with a concentration on psychology and fine arts Master’s degree in art therapy or a related field with an emphasis on art therapy Art therapy internship and supervised clinical experience after graduation

Education Needed Cont… Become a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) through the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB) Registered therapists can take a written exam to earn board certification to gain the title ATR-BC Salary: $19-$29/hour $39,820-$62,280/year Related Careers: Artist Child and Youth Worker Elementary Teacher

5 MAGICIAN Responsibilities: Designing and performing tricks to fool the audience Engaging and audience Making people happy Education Needed: Nothing needed though there are a handful of magician schools

7 TATTOO ARTIST Responsibilities: Creating tattoos Being aware of clients’ needs and wants Cleaning and disinfecting equipment and skin Education Needed: Nothing needed but apprenticeship is encouraged

17 DISC JOCKEY (DJ) Responsibilities: Broadcast DJs may work for radio stations Mobile DJs travel to perform at weddings, parties, and other gigs Education Needed: An applicant’s performance during an audition is often the most important Many employers prefer to hire broadcast DJs who have a bachelor’s or associate degree in communications or broadcasting Programs that include an internship at a radio station are particularly useful

19 SPECIAL-EFFECTS TECHNICIAN Responsibilities: Meet with production teams to determine which effects are necessary. CGI techs make images to layer into the film. Makeup artist use cosmetics, paint, plastic, and rubber to prepare actors. Mechanical Specialists make props and sets Pyrotechnic techs create fires and explosions Education Needed: Varies depending on the branch but most employers will accept a 2 year community college degree or a degree from a technical college

20 SPECIAL-EFFECTS TECHNICIAN CONT. Salary: Varies depending on how successful you are but most ranges from $35,000- $85,000 Related Careers: Costume Designer Explosives Specialist Set Designer

21 COMEDIAN Responsibilities: Most work independently, booking their own gigs at comedy clubs and theaters Some work with other comedians The pressure to come up with new and funny material can be stressful Education Needed: High School Education 2-year College or Technical Training 4-year University or College

22 COMEDIAN CONT. Salary: Entry Wage: $8.28/hour Median Wage: $9.15/hour Experienced Wage: $16.48/hour $5,000-$1 Million a year Related Careers: Actor Director Singer Disc Jockey

23 STUNT PERSON Responsibilities: Must work on contract for TV and film production companies Stunt work is dangerous; performers risk broken bones, burns, and other severe injuries Work indoors in film studios and outdoors on location Often travel to filming locations Filming often requires long workdays Education Needed: High School Education

24 STUNTPERSON CONT. Salary: $50,000-$200,000 a year Related Careers: Circus Performer Dancer Personal Trainer

25 TAXIDERMIST Responsibilities: Most are self-employed; some work for natural history museums Usually work for long hours Often work alone Hazards include cuts and scrapes from sharp instruments Exposed to hazardous chemicals Education Needed: High School 2-year College or Technical Training

27 CONCLUSION There are several different variations of jobs within the arts and communication field Arts & Communications isn’t just about being an artist
