2 Verbs Review with answers Answer the following as best you can in your comp book, without looking at your grammar book: 1.What is the definition of a verb? A word that expresses action or being. 2.Sentences cannot exist without what? A verb. 3.What is the definition of a transitive verb? intransitive verb? A transitive verb has an object. An intransitive verb does not have an object. Ask “what?” or “whom?” after reading the verb to find out if it has an object. If you can answer “what?” or “whom?” it has an object and is therefore transitive. 4.What is the definition of a linking verb? A linking verb connects the subject to another word or words that describe or rename the subject. It’s like an = sign. 5.What is a verb phrase? A group of words that contain a main verb and one or more helping verbs 6.How many helping verbs are there? Look up your helping verbs and take turns with a partner reciting them 3 times. 23

3 Action of Being? Decide whether each sentence contains a verb that expresses action or being. Write A for action and B for being. 1._B_ Butters was furious at Cartman. 2._A_ Cartman rode Butters’ Big Wheel without permission. 3._B_ Butters is afraid he will do it again.

4 Transitive or Intransitive? Decide if the verb is T (transitive) or I (intransitive) 1._T_ Cartman scored points playing his video game. 2._I_ His mother ran down the street to pick up dinner. 3._T_Cartman ate the pizza in 3 seconds.

5 Verbs Phrases Review Read the following sentences. Write down the entire verb phrase. 1.Kyle should be arriving in 2 hours. 2.Cartman will write a letter to the creators of World of Warcraft. 3.Kyle is helping Cartman with the letter. 4.If not, Cartman might make mistakes.

6 Linking Verbs Write Y if the sentence contains a linking verb and N if it does not. 1.This class has been joyful and exciting. Y 2.The cake appeared at the end of class. N 3.The cake looks delicious. Y 4.It appears edible. Y 5.The cake is tasty. Y
