1 A plot diagram is a graphic organizer used to map the significant events in a story. By placing the most significant events from a story on the plot diagram, you can visualize the key events of the story. Plot Structure Plot is the sequence of events in a story describes the structure of a story.

3 Types of Plots Chronological order – story told in time order Flashback- story contains retold memories or events.

4 Plot Components Exposition: the start of the story, the situation before the action starts Rising Action: the series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax Climax: the turning point, the most intense moment—either mentally or in action Falling Action: all of the action which follows the climax Resolution: the conclusion, the tying together of all of the threads

5 Exposition : the start of the story, the situation before the action starts Reader learns: Characters Setting

6 Rising Action: the series of conflicts and crisis in the story that lead to the climax

7 Climax The turning point in the story; often very exciting. Main character must make a decision or take action.

8 Falling Action Characters start to resolve problems, their attitude and/or behavior changes.

9 Resolution The story ends and loose ends are tied up. Plans for the future maybe discussed.

10 Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between 2 forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

11 Types of Conflict Human vs. Nature Human vs. Society Human vs. Self Internal Conflict Human vs. Human External Conflict Human vs. Technology or nonhumans

12 Point of View 1 st person–uses “I” & “me”

13 3 rd person Point of View– uses “he”, “she”, etc. TWO Types of 3 rd person: 3 rd Person Limited – LIMITED to ONE point of view only 3 rd Person Omniscient – (omni- means ALL) we know hearts & minds of ALL characters

14 The Monkey’s Paw: Exposition Characters: The White’s, Sgt. Major Morris The White’s are expecting a visit from a guest. Sgt. Major brings a monkey’s paw from India. Setting: 1940’s, England

15 The Monkey’s Paw: Rising Action The Whites make a wish for 200 pounds. Mr. Phipps comes to tell them that Herbert has died and he is giving them 200 pounds. The grieving Whites wish their son back, with the second wish.

16 The Monkey’s Paw: Climax When Herbert, now a zombie, knocks at the door.

17 The Monkey’s Paw: Falling Action Mr. White finds the monkey’s paw and makes the third and final wish: for his son to go back to the grave.

18 Resolution Mr. White stands out in the road, all alone, after Herbert has returned to the grave.
