New Generation, New Technology, New Classroom Advancing the Use of Modern Technology in the Classroom

These kids today…

How do we reach the New Generation?  Face it. Pencils and Paper are just not on the Must-Have List for today’s students.  There are too many gadgets that make sounds and have flashing lights for students to want to focus on a lecture or textbook.  Bottom Line: Students are going to use technology anyway. Why not teach them how to use it in a positive way and for educational purposes?

New Educational Technology  Beyond Question Student Response System  a.k.a. “Clickers”  SMART Technology  SMART Boards  SMART Notebook  Google Cloud Connect  Document Sharing  There’s more out there, but these will get us started.

Explore the Beyond Question Student Response System

SMART Technology  SMART Education Solutions: SMART’s award winning products help teachers bring more collaboration and interactivity into the classroom. Because SMART products are so easy to use, teachers can quickly incorporate them into their teaching to transform student learning and increase engagement.  Explore SMART Technology at the following link: SMART

Google Cloud Connect  What is Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office?  Google cloud connect is a plug-in for Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, and 2010 that lets you share and simultaneously edit Microsoft Word, PowerPoint®, and Excel® documents with your co- workers and students. You get the collaboration benefits of Google Docs, while continuing to use Microsoft Office.  Syncing and sharing documents : Google Cloud Connect tracks, manages, and syncs all changes on your Microsoft Office documents into one updated version for each document. Each document that you sync through Google Cloud Connect gets a unique URL or web address that you can share with collaborators through IM or email.  Collaborating simultaneously on documents : Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office lets you easily share documents with other people. When you add other people as editors to a document, they receive an email letting them know that you've shared a document with them. When an editor makes changes to a document in Microsoft Office, all changes get synced and appear on your screen.  Revision history : Using Google Cloud Connect, you can edit a document online and offline. Every time you sync a document, the revisions of a document are stored so you can easily roll back to a previous version. You can go back to any prior revision of a document at any time.

Advantages of Technology  It’s more interesting.  It’s less time consuming.  It’s easier to keep track of.  Instant feedback and Sharing Capabilities.  More than one way to learn.

New Classroom Vision  The Beyond Question Student Response System will be used to monitor student engagement and progress.  Lessons will be presented and modeled on a SMART Board using SMART Notebook software and Microsoft PowerPoint.  Differentiated Instruction will be implemented and supported through the use of technology.  Students will actively participate in lessons and guided practice.  Students will collaborate with peers using Google Cloud Connect.

Expected Outcomes  Students will be more engaged in lessons.  Instant feedback will allow teachers to quickly identify weak areas of instruction.  Student performance will be improved.  Lesson planning will become more structured and focused.  Class time will be spent more affectively.

Making it Happen  What we need:  More readily available computers for students in the form of one of the following:  A Separate Computer Lab with updated and working computers for the High School with required software  Mobile Laptop Units with wireless Internet and required software (Preferred)  SMART Board Training for Teachers  Beyond Question Student Response System Training for Teachers  Google Cloud Connect Training for Teachers and Students  At least 2 more Beyond Question Student Response Systems  A SMART Board for the English I Classroom  Student Google Accounts need to be set up for all students with teacher monitoring available  SMART Notebook, PowerPoint, and Beyond Question Lesson Resources  The most challenging and costly requirement needed to make this vision a reality would be the availability of updated, functioning computers for student use. This need could possibly be met through a state or federal grant. There is also the possibility of grants from professional organizations such as those sponsoring the Missouri Writing Project. However, the current computer situation is not impossible to work with; it just takes advanced planning and a lot of patience. The necessary training for teachers is available through local resources within the school district, the Internet and the RPDC.

Final Thought  The world is using technology in every aspect of life.  Our job as educators is to prepare our students for the real world so that they will be successful in their lives.  We will be neglecting our duty as teachers if we do not adapt and help our students to incorporate technology in their learning process.
