Changing the Heart of the Heartless Luke 10:25-37 Faith In Action 2009

Concern After 8/9 Faith In Action campaign our hearts will remain unchanged. Last Week Wrong Question – Who is my neighbor? Correct Question – Who will be a neighbor?

This Morning – Two Questions 1.Why do we (I) identify with the wrong characters in this story? 2. How can Jesus change our (my) hearts?

Luke 10:25-29 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Justification is the process of being made right with God. 1.Justification by faith in Jesus alone… 2.Self Justification (Two forms). – Blatant works righteousness… I keep the law, therefore God loves me… – Subtle works righteousness… I am forgiven because of Jesus’ work but my obedience keeps God happy with me.

What will change our hearts? Programs like August 9 th will not. Being shamed or guilt tripped will not. Imitating good examples will not. Only the gospel can change the heart…

2 Corinthians 5:14-16 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.

Ephesians 3:14-19 14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
