2  Its current position is about 400km east of Africa separated by the Mozambique Channel.  In 1960, the country became a fully independent country called the Malagasy Republic.  Nearly all of Madagascar was once covered in forests but much of the land has now been cleared.  Areas of Madagascar is covered in a rich, red soil which is suitable for farming.  Over three-quarters of the island species cant be found anywhere in the world.

5  From 1999 to 2010, scientists discovered 615 new species in Madagascar, including 41 mammals and 61 reptiles.  Madagascar as some of the world's most interesting animals. About 75% of the species found in Madagascar live nowhere else on the planet.  { On the next slide there is pictures of some off the animals.}

7  Houses are rectangular and have steeply angled roofs.  Most houses are made of either mud or woven matting supported by poles.  In the eastern forest, they are built of split bamboo.

8  The colours of the flag represent Madagascar's history, yearning for independence, and traditional classes.  Red and white were the colours of the Merina kingdom.  Green was the colour of the Hover.
