Integrated Curriculum Plan for a Diverse Classroom: A Lesson Plan for a Middle School Social Studies and Language Arts Unit CI 5313: Curriculum and Instructional Design for Multicultural Classrooms Lisa Cohen December 16, 2014

Interdisciplinary project planning process 1. Identify the Sunshine State Standards 2. Identify Standards that will be addressed. 4. Select Strategies and Activities. 3. State Objectives for the plan.

Sunshine State Standards Alignment for Language Arts and Social Studies Language Arts.7.1.7.3: Determine the main idea in grade level or higher text through inferring, paraphrasing, summarizing and identifying relevant details; Social Studies: 7.G.1: Understand how to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technology to report information. (Florida Department of Education, 2013)

Objectives to Learning (To ensure the decided target is hit) 1.Students will illustrate their comprehension of the economic regions of the United States. 2.Students will compare and contrast the geographical features influence on the types of industry within the United States. 3.Students will summarize and restate the major industries of the United States.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY Throughout the course of World Geography, we study the economic trends within the regions. This unit covers the Five Economic Regions of the United States.

Evidence Based Research Aligning to Bloom’s Taxonomy (Bloom's Taxonomy Action Verbs, 2014) ACTIVITY/STRATEGY DESCRIPTIONBLOOM’S TAXONOMY LEVEL RESOURCE AND INSTRUCTIONAL TOOLS After reading, classroom discussion and reinforcement through videos, students will break into groups to research assigned region of U.S. ApplicationDiscovery Education provides many classroom tools. This particular lesson is found at their link as follows: https://app.discoveryeducation.com/search?Ntt=u.s.+r egions+resources https://app.discoveryeducation.com/search?Ntt=u.s.+r egions+resources Tool: Educational videos Students will transfer written information to graphics as they complete outline maps. Comprehension Using maps helps create evidence for teaching geography, economics and history (Parker & Conzen, 1975). More information on the uses of maps can be found at http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED125935.pdfhttp://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED125935.pdf Tool: Dry Erase Board U.S. Maps Students write and respond to peer blog posts about their research. EvaluatingBlogging helps close the achievement gap for ELL students (Schwartz, 2011). 7 Unit Study on Regional Economics of the United States The subgroup, the English Language Learners (Hispanic) will be given additional accommodations including visual and hands- on learning tools as well as collaborative work. Note: The 21 st Century students in general communicate visually and prefer visuals, graphics and images, inclusive of videos and photos (Berk, 2010). Therefore, it is an appropriate curriculum unit for all groups. In addition, when students are working on English acquisition, working in peer groups, in this instance, to do research, has proved to be helpful (Colombo, 2002).

ASSESSMENTS Comprehension Application Evaluating After reading and viewing video, students will place major economic resources on outline maps. To deepen understanding, students will apply learned context through collaborative research. Students will write a blog and respond to peers about information researched as a peer teaching writing activity.
