2 2 Server Manager Gives ability to perform effectively server administration without needing to launch a multitude of tools It’s the “command control center” It gives the bird’s eye view what is installed, general health status, identify critical events, analyze and troubleshoot configuration issues or failures Perform management tasks associated with server, such as starting or stopping services, and managing local user accounts

3 3 Who Should use Server Manager An IT administrator, planner, or analyst evaluating Windows Server 2008 -An enterprise IT planner or designer An early adopter of Windows Server 2008 An IT architect responsible for computer management and security throughout your organization

4 4 Who Should use Server Manager (continue) An IT operations engineer who is responsible for the day- to-day management and troubleshooting of networks, servers, operating systems, or applications. An IT operations manager who is accountable for network and server management, IT hardware and software budgets, and technical decisions.

5 5 Server Manager overview Server Manager is the hub of Windows 2008 View and make changes to server roles and features installed on server Perform management tasks associated with server such as starting or stopping services, and managing local user accounts Perform management tasks associated with roles, role services, and features installed on the server Determine server status, identify critical events, and analyze and troubleshooting

6 6 Server Manager overview (continue) Windows Server 2008 encourages us to use the command line. The rational is that for some tasks it's quicker to type a few commands than to drill down 27 levels with the mouse While PowerShell is the most famous new scripting language, ServerManagerCmd.exe is a simple command just for installing or removing Windows Server 2008's roles and features As a start try: ServerManagerCmd.exe -help Then try ServerManagerCmd.exe -query (See what you have already)

7 7 Server Manager Snap-ins Feature that provides a common environment for running management software - network management, antivirus management, disk management Win2008 grouped snap-ins into 5 major categories: Roles, Features, Diagnostics, Configuration, Storage Roles snap-ins: provides list of all installed roles as well as links to Add Roles and Remove Roles wizards Feature snap-ins: provides consolidated views into all installed features. Can add or remove features

8 8 Server Manager Snap-ins (continue) Diagnostic snap-ins: provides event viewer, service manager, reliability and performance Configuration snap-ins: Allows access to Local Users and Group system tool. ex: Task Scheduler, Windows Firewall, Advanced Security Storage snap-ins: provides Windows Server Backup and Disk Management. - Not installed by default. Admin may use 3 rd party backup
