2 To begin… You have 5 MINUTES to try to fill in the third section of your glossaries (heteroglossia-octave) Easy? Try to add some EXAMPLES to each definition Really stuck? Ask me for some mixed up definitions that you can match up…

3 Heteroglossia – Octave Use of exaggeration A satirical imitation of a heroic style Setting two contrasting images against each other in close proximity The presence of multiple voices within the same text One thing conceived as representing another A recurrent theme/element in a poem An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning/ what is expected and what happens A group of eight lines in poetry The perspective of the narrator concerning what they are exploring Words or phrases that contain a single syllable The use of sensory language to create visual/auditory pictures in the reader’s mind Under-estimation – the opposite of exaggeration

4 To My 9 year-old self -Look at the word given to you 1.Is it a verb, noun or adjective in the context of the poem? 2.In the poem, does it apply to the child or the adult? What does it say about that character?

5 An easy passage Q: What is the significance of the word ‘halfway’ in the first line? A: A poem about boundaries, about the liminal space between two worlds. Re-read and annotate all of the boundaries (literal and metaphorical) you come across: e.g. – light v shade -Inside v outside -Up v down -Girl v woman -Safe v vulnerable -Present v future

Consider where ‘we’ is used in contrast with ‘you’? 2.What imagery is used to re-create a child’s world? 3.Why is the poem set in summer? Copus 4. How do the descriptions of the two girls contrast with the depiction of the third woman (the secretary) in the passage? 5. How is light used in the poem? 6. Why is the poem written in the present tense? What references are there to the future to belie this immediacy?
