Future of Higher Education Kristofer Kimmel - 597C

Problems facing Higher Education Explosion of Student Cost Less State Funding for Higher Education Higher Loan Rates for Students attending college. Emergence of online learning.

Rising Cost of College 2012-2013 Average cost of Private Schools for the year was $29,056 Average Cost of State Public Universities was $8,655 for in State residents Average Cost of State Public Universities was $21,706 for out-of-state residents.

Why pay that much??? A University Degree still helps a student get higher paying jobs than a High School Diploma School Atmosphere/Pride Many jobs still require College Degree.

Disruptions to Higher Education MOOCS Badging Prior Learning Assessment Technology

MOOCS Massive Open Online Courses MOOCs offer students options to taking college courses. Many courses offered through established mediums such as Udacity, Coursera, and EdX Can solve overcrowding issues at "Brick and Mortar" campuses. Can offer Professors the option to flip the classroom

Badges Digital Badging is a way that employers can look at grades and specific skills learned by the students Shows that the Students are certified in specific skills. Badges awarded for specific criteria.

Prior Learning Assessment Important for people that are attending Universities that already have certain skills and experience Examples of prior learning could have occurred in the military and previous work experience.

Technology Need to lessen the technology gap Help streamline traditional classroom lectures Students already experienced with technology

Prediction for Higher Education There will still be large, costly Universities and Colleges that students will attend to earn a degree Students will still have the need and desire to attend these schools where they can paticipate in a social and education atmosphere that online courses cannot provide. School pride will still be important to students as well

Badging will not replace portfolios and eportfolios for the students applying for jobs. Badges will however be a complement to a students developed portfolio. MOOCs will be an important part to these Universities for general education classes that students need before going into their degree tracks. These classes are often overcrowded and the Universities could save money this way. More Professor will use MOOC's as a way to help them flip their classrooms.

Flipping the classroom will trickle down to secondary and elementary schools. (already have. I attended an In-Service where they are teaching teachers how and what resources to use to flip their classrooms) More Universities will accept PLA for their degree programs. There will still be a need for these Universities especially for non STEM degree programs.
