Driving SCIENCE STEM Activity 12 Setting Up A Data Collection Model

Collecting Base-Line Data Team Activity Each student has a position: standing, kneeling, sitting, or lying down. One stands in front of the other students and drops a ball from shoulder height. One student sprints from his or her position from the starting mark and catches the ball before the second bounce. One student times the sprint. One student records the position and time.

Which Displays Work With Our Raw Data? Table Bar graph Double bar graph Line (dot) plot Scatter plot Stem and leaf Box and whisker Histogram Circle graph Line graph Will you choose a computer program or paper and pencil to display the data? Why?

Developing the Display Teamwork Choose a data display for the activity data. Decide on paper or technology. Set up the display. Enter the data. Include title and labels. Be prepared to share how you developed your display.

Summarizing the Data What did you find out about the times from the different positions? In what ways will the times change when a distraction is added to the data collection? What can we do differently the next time we collect data? How is the information in the raw data and the displayed data similar? Different?

Reflecting on the Project How does this activity connect to driving? Does your family have rules about driving distractions? What distractions while driving or riding in a car have put you in danger?
