Bar Graphs Foundations of Algebra

What is a Bar Graph??  A Bar Graph uses rectangular bars or objects to represent data. They can be used to compare individual years or other distinct items.  For example:  Comparing the price in jeans, shorts, and t-shirts from a given store.  Comparing the types of music a class likes  Comparing the heights of boy and girls in a gym class

Ways to Display Data  Now you have three ways to represent data: Stem and Leaf Plots, Box and Whisker Plots, and Bar Graphs.  A bar graph is useful for comparing facts. The bars provide a visual display for comparing quantities in different categories. Bar graphs help us to see relationships quickly. Another name for a bar graph is a bar chart. Each part of a bar graph has a purpose.

The Parts of a Bar Graph

Example of a Bar Graph

Example

Double Bar Graph – Compare two pieces of data at one time on the same graph

Horizontal Bar Graph

Go 3D

Bar Graphs vs. Histograms

Reading a Graph and Answering the Questions
