2 Myth#1: Mental illness is unusual Fact#1: Rather it is quite common. Many mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, etc are in fact called Common Mental Disorders!

3 Myth#2: Mental health problems do not happen to people who are ‘strong’ Fact#2: Mental health problems can happen to anybody, including those who are seen as ‘strong’ or ‘weak’ as these depend on multiple and complex mix of biological and psychological factors.

4 Myth#3: If I know the cause of my emotional problems I can bear it and will not need help… Fact#3 : Just knowing/analyzing the cause or reason is often insufficient to deal with the mental health concerns.

5 Myth#4: Psychological needs are taken care of automatically if physical needs are met Fact#4: Both physical and psychological aspects of health require attention and care. Although both influence each other, taking care of one does not automatically result in taking care of the other.

6 Myth#5: Mentally ill people are violent Fact#5: In fact, mentally ill individuals are more likely to be victims of violence than to be violent themselves. Statistics indicate that the majority of violent crimes are committed by people who do not have a mental illness.

7 Myth#6: Mental health treatments are about just medications that make you dull, drowsy or dependent Fact#6: Psychiatric medications are meant to target the symptoms of the condition. Though some medications may have side effects such as excessive drowsiness, many newer medications have minimal side effects. Most of them do not have a potential for addiction. Also, there are multiple treatments available, including a wide range of psychological treatments for different conditions.

8 Myth#7: Psychological treatments for mental health problems means- just counseling – which means just getting advices- which anyway we know/hear from others & it does not help Fact#7: Psychological treatments are not just about ‘advising’. It is a systematic process, learnt through professional training. There are different kinds of psychological therapies which involve different techniques and processes demonstrated to be effective through research, for a variety of mental health disorders.

9 Myth#8: If someone has a mental health problem, they cannot live a normal, productive life Fact#8: In spite of the suffering, many individuals with mental health conditions can live a productive and satisfying life as there are effective treatment approaches available to manage a variety of mental health conditions.

10 Myth#9: If you have good support from people around you- that is enough to handle all mental health issues Fact#9: Good support system is a big resource but it may not always be enough. Sometimes, professional help is also needed.

11 Myth#10: Seeking consultation for mental health is a sign of weakness Fact#10: Rather, it is a sign of courage and responsibility-taking for one’s health.
