OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE OOI Cyberinfrastructure Education and Public Awareness Plan Cyberinfrastructure Design Workshop October 17-19, 2007 University of California, San Diego

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE OOI EPA Overarching Goal Promote awareness, appreciation, and understanding of ocean discoveries, and showcase the transformational role of ocean observatories in understanding the ocean.

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE A NSF Expectation for OOI EPA Promote a culture of open access to OOI assets for the broadest set of audiences and partnerships so that the most creative ideas on using OOI assets come forward and are fully developed. All strategies and activities need to involve the open sharing of data, images, and other assets with the broader community.

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE CI IO EPA Goals 1. Create education infrastructure that supports the ocean education communities’ efforts to raise public awareness about the OOI (Phase I) 2. Develop educational cyberinfrastructure prototype tools and user interface that allow use of OOI data in formal and informal science education (Phase II) 3. Provide training for OOI education users (Phase II) 4. Establish key partnerships within the OOI and observatory education community to foster community-wide participation and input into educational cyberinfrastructure development (Phases I and II)

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE CI Education and Public Awareness Major Components  Visualizations and Animations  Public user interface  Educational Prototypes  Training Programs  EPA Web Portal

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Key to Success Working with other IOs, OOI Program Office and other community stake-holders to: –Identify and prioritize key audiences (resources are limited) –Assess user needs (education user requirements) –Establish multifaceted teams to design, develop, test and refine education cyberinfrastructure products and tools

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE 1. Create education infrastructure that supports the ocean education communities’ efforts to raise public awareness about the OOI Objectives:  Develop a web-based visualization resource center – a collection of high-quality animations, visualizations and graphics that illustrate the OOI capabilities and link to science themes  Create a photo and video archive of the design, construction and installation of the OOI network  Use existing online cyber-tools such as Google Earth to highlight OOI as an exciting research and education endeavor

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Visualization Resource Center: Graphics, Animations and Visualizations  One stop shopping for scientists, communications specialists and educators  Up-to-date, searchable archive  Components that can be combined with photo and video documentation to create products for TV, web, science centers and classroom use

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Photo and video documentation  Documentation of “perishable” events such as testing and deployment of OOI infrastructure  Archived record of the process of creating the OOI  Available for use in promotional activities including communications with the media and creation of TV documentaries

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Use of Existing Online Tools Google Earth featured content

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE 2. Develop educational cyberinfrastructure prototype tools and user interface that allow use of OOI data in formal and informal science education. Objectives:  Develop prototype education user interface(s) – collaboration with wider community (e.g. COSEE NOW)  Develop simple graphing and modeling tools (e.g. SCCOOS)  Develop, test and refine OOI prototype education products (field test in science centers and classrooms)

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Simple Graphing and Modeling Tools

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE User Interface Prototypes  Informed by user needs assessment  Complementary collaborators will be COSEE Networked Ocean World and COSEE Ocean Systems  Based on use case scenarios for variety of non-scientist audiences

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Prototype Education Products (collaborations with other IOs)  online virtual learning environments (Whyville)  interactive, digital media-based exhibits at science centers (Liberty Science Center, Birch Aquarium at Scripps)  online learning modules for formal classroom settings and web-based courses (GEO-Teach program; SDUSD Enhancing Science Education Through Technology

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Training Programs  Phased approach  Start with scientist user audience (collaborate with science user requirements team; O. Schofield and S. Glenn)  Phase in other target audiences  Provide researchers with tools to train others (e.g. graduate students, undergraduates, teachers)  Online (videoconferencing) and face-to-face  Need use case scenarios for EPA users

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Key Areas of Focused Effort  Assembling the appropriate EPA team to interface with the CI design team  Collaborating with entities engaging in complementary projects that will support design, testing and refining of interface, tools and products  Connecting with formal and informal science educators to test prototype products (ESETT, BAS, Liberty Science Center)

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Current CI IO EPA Team  Project Manager  Activities Coordinator  K-12 Observatory Education Specialist  Web site developer/Graphic Artist  Programmer(s)

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Timeline  Phase 1(Years 0 - 2): CI EPA team assembled; hire programmer for animation and visualization; establish visualization resource center; capture design and deployment of OOI incl. CI; promote OOI CI to user groups; prepare for training workshops (with program scientists)  Phase 2 (Years 3-6): user interface design and testing; development of prototype education graphing, mapping and modeling tools; education prototype product development  Phases 1 and 2: Establish and expand partnerships within EPA community

OOI-CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE Web Portal  CI IO EPA team is creating the CI IO education web portal  EPA portal will be coordinated with the other IOs and program office  Serve as a central repository for OOI EPO products
