2 Bike to Work Day Coincides with National Bike to Work week Event celebrates bicycling to work as a viable commute option Started by Washington Area Bicyclist Association as a District of Columbia event 1998 Commuter Connections rolled out regional event Participation has increase dramatically from several hundred to 7,000

3 Bike to Work Day Event Survey Purpose of survey was to identify the experience of event participants Assess use of bicycles for commute travel before and after event Results used in July 2005 - June 2008 Transportation Emission Reduction Measure Administered via e-mail to 6,600 event participants COG received 2,411 completed questionnaires –37% response rate TERM EVALUATION PROJECT - May 2007

4 Bike to Work Day Event Survey Bike to Work Day event increases bicycle commuting –21% of survey respondents never commuted by bicycle before participating in annual event Bike to Work Day event expands the frequency of bicycle commuting –12% of survey respondents who commuted by bicycle previous to event started bicycling more after participating TERM EVALUATION PROJECT - May 2007

9 Bike to Work Day 2009 Free and open to all commuters in the National Capital Region Register at www.waba.org Participants receive free T-shirts, refreshments, and a chance to win free donated bicycles

10 Employer Focus Event encourages business community to support bicycle-friendly culture (bike racks, showers/lockers) Bicyclists collectively work for over 1,000 different employers throughout region Bicycling to work benefits employers through reduced parking overhead Better employee health and fitness – lowering absenteeism and health care costs Employer Challenge luncheon

11 Support for Bicyclists WABA formed Commuter Convoys led by experienced bicyclists –helps empower commuters to try bicycling Free Bike to Work guides available from Commuter Connections Free Confident City Cycling classes offered by Washington Area Bicyclist Association New Bike Path Finder by Commuter Connections Bicycling covered through Commuter Connections’ Guaranteed Ride Home program
