Improved data exchange infrastructure and a virtual network for Europe and the Mediterranean Chad Trabant KNMI/ORFEUS Data Center EC-Project MEREDIAN:

A look back in time, 16 years ago Status BB stations 1987 Existing: solid triangles. Planned: open squares. Source: ORFEUS Data Center, 1988

The EC project MEREDIAN Mediterranean-European Rapid Earthquake Data Information and Archiving Network Start date: November 1, 2000 MEREDIAN consortium: 18 members End date: April 30, 2005 Goal:Initialize real-time waveform data exchange in Europe and make previously inaccessible data available to the research community, developing a distributed archive WP1: Improving and securing data archival WP2: Improving rapid cross border data exchange WP3: Developing a distributed European seismological archive WP4: Seismological software co-ordination

Broadband seismic stations in and around Europe

Virtual European Broadband Seismograph Network

Real-time automated processing

EMSC MIX EuroMed Events 01/09 – 10/10 Mag >= 4.5 VEBSN detection performance NEIS QED Events 01/09 – 16/10 Mag >= 5.5 12 4 14 24 45

- Data streams from 70 stations: (operational: ~60 stations, ~ 380 MB/day) - Event processing criteria: EuroMed, lat: 20 – 80, lon: -20 – 50, mb/Ml: >= 4.5 Global, mb/Ml: >= 5.5 -Data products + “5min” product, 5 minutes before and after predicted P-wave + CURD (Collection of UnpRocessed Data) product, 5 minutes before to 30 minutes or phase at 2.4 km/second + AutoDRM access to continuous waveform buffer Minimum 7 days, maximum 30 days + Rapid event alert VEBSN system summary

A 5min product: 2003/2/22 20:41, France

System status online: overview

System status online: per network

ODC data pipeline

ODC data holdings

Results - Rapid, automated data collection for the ODC - Rapid data accessibility for end users - Short-term (30 days) continuous data - Potential for a significant increase waveform data collected - VEBSN produces automatic event bulletins - Stimulate data exchange within the EuroMed community

Other real-time data exchange efforts - SeisComP/SeedLink system development GEOFON Project, GFZ, Germany - Real-time data and network integration in the Southern Alps OGS/Univ. of Trieste, Italy EARS, Slovenia ZAMG, Austria - Buffer of Uniform Data (BUD) IRIS Data Management Center, U.S.A. …
