The Electromagnetic Radiation's so BRIGHT I have to Wear Shades... KELLY JONES CUIN 5640

Objective: IWBAT: Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.

For Discussion: How do people protect themselves from the sun? Why is the sun’s radiation dangerous?

Why is the sun dangerous?

The Dangers of Sunlight: 1. People must protect themselves from the warmth of infrared portion of the Sun's spectrum so as to not become dehydrated or suffer heat stroke.

The Dangers of Sunlight: 2. The visible part of sunlight is very bright and can cause damage to the eyes if looked at directly.

The Dangers of Sunlight: 3. The UV radiation in sunlight can lead to serious skin and eye damage, including cancer. PHOTOKERATITIS (Snow blindness)- Cornea Burn

Activity Overview Day 1- Experiment Day 2- Prototype design Day 3- Class Presentations

UV Light/Sunglasses Experiment Investigative Question: Are all sunglasses equally effective in protecting your eyes from this type of light?

Part 1- UV Bead 1. Place your bead in a sunny window time how long it takes to completely change color. Record your observations. 2. Remove the bead from the window and hold it in your hand so that it is no longer exposed to any light for about two minutes. What happens to the bead after it has been removed from the sunlight near the window? Record your observations.

Lab Reflection

OPTIMIZE DEFINE DEVELOP SOLUTIONS

Engineering Challenge You must design a pair of sunglasses for a specific activity/job that will decrease the amount of UV light entering the wear’s eyes.

Project Schedule Today: Complete Rough Draft and Final Draft of Prototype Sketch Tomorrow: Create a 30 second commercial and Present commercials

Criteria Your sunglasses must include lenses that meet ANSI guidelines (Lens 1, 2, or 3?) You must identify the activity or job the glasses or designed for, such as sun tanning, skiing, paintball, etc. (Be able to explain why these glasses are safe and appropriate for the chosen activity.)

Constraints Your glasses must be safe and practical.

Prototype/Sketch Expectations: You must finish your design by the end of class today and show it to this teacher. (This is an effort grade.) Your final sketch must be “large” (take up most of the paper), labeled (materials and lens type) and have display the product’s name. Don’t forget you need to be able to explain the purpose of these glasses and why they are safe! If you have time today you may begin working on your commercial presentation.

Commercial Expectations: All group members must participate. Commercial should be creative and last 30 sec. Commercial must explain purpose/safety benefits. Commercial must include appropriate science vocabulary.
