4.  Annotating is a way of making sure you understand the most important parts of a text.  The word annotation comes from the Latin root not/nota, which means “to mark or sign.”  You will be marking the text  Annotating text also helps you with your own writing. By understanding what McBride does to make his essay strong and powerful, you will be able to make your own writing more powerful.

5. D IRECTIONS : Attach the handout to the upper left-hand corner of “Hip Hop Planet” to serve as a reminder of what you are to do. I want you to: (1) highlight or underline (2) makes notes in your margin.
