3 A NNOTATING AND Q UESTIONING THE T EXT

4  Annotating is a way of making sure you understand the most important parts of a text.  The word annotation comes from the Latin root not/nota, which means “to mark or sign.”  You will be marking the text  Annotating text also helps you with your own writing. By understanding what McBride does to make his essay strong and powerful, you will be able to make your own writing more powerful.

5 D IRECTIONS : Attach the handout to the upper left-hand corner of “Hip Hop Planet” to serve as a reminder of what you are to do. I want you to: (1) highlight or underline (2) makes notes in your margin.

6 A NNOTATING AND QUESTIONING TEXT You are required to have a total of 12 left margin notes and right margin notes!!! This will be graded as classwork for the next notebook check. I will stamp your text tomorrow.

7 A NNOTATING AND Q UESTIONING THE T EXT  Left Margin: Understanding Content and Purpose  Highlight, underline, and make notes in the margin where you find the following: The issues McBride is writing about McBride’s main points Examples that show how McBride feels about the issue Examples of how hip hop is a global issue What McBride wants his readers to do or believe  RIGHT MARGIN: Reacting to the Text  Highlight, underline, and make notes in the margin where you: Agree Disagree Have a question Have a comment Have any sort of reaction (This might mean feeling surprised, shocked, confused, or interested.)
