I believe that they either didn’t know any better (didn’t have the tools, knowledge, education or expertise, or they were caught off guard or by surprise by a life changing event. If you become: ill, develop an addiction (drugs, alcohol, gambling) lose a job unexpectedly or get in an accident, or take a parental leave Any of these life events whether we anticipate them happening to us or not, can and usually do lead to financial difficulties of some kind.
