Space Science Chapter 1

Bell Work 1/4/10  Welcome Back! I hope you all enjoyed your break.  Please obtain a pink sheet from the counter by the sinks and answer the following questions 1. What is something that you will change this quarter to help improve your grades? 2. What grade would you like to get in science this quarter? 3. What are at least 3 things that you will do to reach your science goals?

Space Science 1.1 Vocab Orbit – the path of an object in space as it moves around another object because of gravity

Solar system – the sun, the planets, and various smaller bodies make up the solar system

Galaxy – a group of millions or billions of stars held together by their own gravity Milky way – our solar system and the stars you can see with your bare eyes are part of this galaxy

The universe – space and all the matter and energy in it  The Milky Way is just one of many billions of galaxies in the universe

Constellation – group of stars that form a pattern in the sky http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/the_universe/Constellations/circumpolar/ursa_major.html

Bell Work 1/5/10 Decide if each statement is true. If not, correct it. (Write each sentence in your bell work then change if it is incorrect) 1. There are 11 planets in our solar system. 2.The stars in the sky are all the same distance from Earth. 3.It takes Earth one year to orbit the sun.

Bell Work 1/6/10 Please use complete sentences 1. What is a constellation? 2. What is a galaxy? 3. What is an orbit?

Bell Work 1/11/10 1. What is a solar system? 2. List the planets in our solar system.

Bell work 1/12/10 1. What are the basic structures in which objects are grouped together in space? 2. How does Earth’s rotation affect our view of stars? 3. The planet Jupiter is farther than Mars from Earth. Which planet seems to move faster when viewed from Earth? Explain.

Bell Work 1/13/10 Write these sentences and fill in the blanks 1. The moon orbits the ________ 2. The Earth orbits the ________ 3. ________, _______, ________ also orbit the Sun.

Space 1.2 Vocab Electromagnetic radiation – energy that travels across distances as certain types of waves. (radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet radiation, x-rays, and gamma rays)

Spectrum 1. Radiation from a source separated into a range of wavelengths 2. The range of colors that appears in a beam of visible light when it passes through a prism

Wavelength – the distance between one peak and the next peak on a wave

Telescope – a device that gathers visible light or another form of electromagnetic radiation.

Bell work 11/14/09 1. What is a telescope? 2. How do scientists use telescopes? 3. List at least 5 different forms of electromagnetic radiation.

Space 1.3 Vocab Satellite – an object that orbits a more massive object

Space station – a satellite in which people can live and work for long periods

Lander – a craft designed to land on a planet’s surface

Probe - a spacecraft that is sent into a planet’s atmosphere or onto a solid surface

Bell Work 1/19/10 (Fill in the blanks) 1. Apollo astronauts practiced important procedures in space to prepare for landing on the _________ 2. All of the different forms of electromagnetic radiation together make up the ________ __________ 3. Which type of telescope gathers radiation with a metal dish? 4. The stars near the North Pole appear to move in circles around ________ 5. The _____ ______ contains only one star.

Space 1.4 Vocab Impact crater – a round pit left behind on the surface of a planet or other body in space after a smaller object strikes the surface
