2. Preliminaries  Divide into groups of 3 or 4.  Think about and write at least 3 figures of speech that describe animals you would find in a zoo (e.g., the elephant sounded like a trumpet; the cobra is a silent warrior, etc.).  Share.

3. Objectives:  The students will be able to identify and recognize metaphors in poetry.  The students will be able to explain the power of metaphors.  The students will be able to identify and recognize an ode.

4. Focus Lesson: Using…  Literary Terms  Metaphor  Simile  Lyric poem  Read Elements… p. 484.  Modeling: “Since Feeling is First”  Small Groups:  Divide into your small groups.  Take 5 min. reading the poem aloud using your “6-inch voices”.  Exit ticket (part #1): paraphrase the poem in one sentence.  Discussion: p. 485 ex. B and C.

5. Focus Lesson: Using…  Independent Practice  Silently read “Ode to My Socks” (Elements… p. 498)  Exit ticket (part #2): summarize the message.  BONUS: complete discussion questions A-C on pp. 498-9.

6. Homework  Write an ode to an object you see every day and love. Start by observing the object closely, making some notes about how it looks, what it resembles, and why they love it.  Due next class (20 homework points).

7. Homework  Read another 50 pages in your I-Search project book and take at least 10 QNQs.  Due next class (40 project points).
