2 Preliminaries  In your journals, respond to the following prompt: “Many writers have compared life to a journey or trip. Briefly, describe the highlights of your freshman year of high school by comparing it to a journey. Your journey can begin on the first day of high school and should include some of the detours (obstacles) you have encountered along the way.”

3 Objectives:  The students will be able to choose words appropriately when writing to advance the theme of a work.  The students will be able to skim a text to quickly locate information.

4 Focus Lesson: The Vision…  Literary Terms  Epic poem  Quest  Skimming  Symbol  Figurative language  Allegory  Fable  Parable

5 Focus Lesson: The Vision…  Background  The Trojan War  The Odyssey  Information and Data  Divide in to groups of 3.  Take turns reading “Vision Quest” (Elements p. 413)  Write a definition of the Vision Quest.  Paragraph on the vision quest (5 sentences min.)

6 Focus Lesson: The Vision…  Symbolism and Allegory  Small Group Reading: Elements… p. 398  Small Group Writing  Why are symbols effective?  Why do writers use symbols

7 Homework (due next class)  Read “Mosi’s Coyote”.  Take at least 3 QNTs.
