NREL is a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, operated by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC. Wind in Remote Applications NWTC Robi Robichaud 11/3/2010

National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation for Our Energy Future 20% Requires 300 GW - Land & Offshore Actual Projected

National Renewable Energy Laboratory Innovation for Our Energy Future Critical Elements for 20% Scenario Improved Performance –10% reduction in capital cost –15% increase in capacity factor –Address Wind Farm underperformance Mitigate Risk –Reduce O&M costs by 35% –Foster the confidence to support continued 20% per year growth in installation rates from now until 2018 Enhanced Transmission System (AEP) –$60 billion cost estimate over 20 yrs –19,000 mi of line – Supports 200-400 GW addition Policy, Communication & Outreach Infrastructure Development

Electricity Markets and Policy Group Energy Analysis Department Wind Project Installed Costs in 2009 Continued to Rise, on Average Project costs bottomed out in 2001-2004, and have risen by roughly $800/kW, on average, through 2009

Kotzebue, Alaska Application: Village power system 11 MW diesel power plant Operating with 10 turbines since 1999 2MW average load, min load 700kW. Peak wind penetration level ~ 35% Local utility plans expansion to 2-3 MW of wind turbine capacity

Toksook Bay & Kasigluk, AK Bethel serves as a hub for over 50 villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region, many of which have a Class 4–6 wind resource. AVEC’s new wind-diesel systems at Toksook Bay and Kasigluk serve as a model power plants for these communities.

Dispatch during the worst week (April) No wind10% wind 20% wind 30% wind – starting to impact nuclear – likely curtail wind

8 Dispatch during a tame week (July) No wind10% wind 20% wind 30% wind
