3 Background - WMC The Wood Manufacturing Council (WMC) was established in 2001. WMC’s mandate is to plan, develop and implement human resource strategies to support the growth and competitiveness of the sector. WMC works with industry, educators and other stakeholders in support of this mandate.

5 WMC Projects WMC is building momentum from the study and is responding to the issues through projects: Workplace Literacy and Essential Skills Virtual HR Department National Occupational StandardsCareer Focus Skills Upgrading/RISEPLAR WoodLINKSTechnology & Skills Roadmap Pre-employment TrainingMarketing & Outreach

6 National Occupational Standards The National Occupational Standards (NOS) identify the skills, knowledge and ability required by individuals in order to perform competently in an occupation The standards are the basis for training program development and training to the NOS can lead to accreditation The WMC has 5 NOS –Finisher –Machine Operator –Assembler –CNC/Moulder Operator –Supervisor

7 RISE Rapid Internal Skills Enhancement program is an in-house training program focused on practical plant floor training based on the needs of your operations (9 key areas) –General Safety - Taxonomy and Grading –Production Documentation - Solid Wood Processing Machinery –Panel Processing Machinery - Tooling –Preventative Maintenance - Surface Preparation –Finishing On-line management training leading to management certification. (9 modules). –Equipment Justification, Time and Cost Studies - Business Finance –Production Planning & Costing - Human Resource Management –Facility Planning & Layout - Marketing, Sales and Distribution –Quality Management & Control - New Product Development –Supply Chain Management

8 WoodLINKS WoodLINKS – a highschool certification program New WoodLINKS has a validated core curriculum 8 wood sub-sector modules –Furniture- Cabinets –Fine woodworking- Manufactured Housing –Panelboard products- Remanufacturing –Windows and Doors- Entrepreneurship

9 Pre Employment Training To create a basic knowledge pre-employment training program. To expand the reach of WoodLINKS and use it in training settings that are not traditionally highschools. To get significantly greater exposure to equity groups, especially New immigrants, Aboriginal Peoples and Persons with disabilities.

10 Assist Skilled Youth to Find Quality Jobs Wage Subsidy – Up to $12,000 Access skills the Sector needs –Technical (CNC) –Wood Processing –Marketing –Business –Design Career Focus Internship Program

11 EMPLOYERS 4 – 12 Months of Full Time Work (30 hours +) $1 Subsidy for $2 Paid Wages Use Non-Subjective Eligibility Criteria Can Find Their Own Intern Must Provide Contracts, Proof of Wages Paid, Ensure Intern is Aware of Program. 15 -30 Years Old Post-Secondary Graduate Out of School Can Legally Work In Canada Can’t Be Existing Employees Can’t Receive EI INTERNS Career Focus Internship Program
