Entry Task Today you’ll need your journal, and a writing utensil, and one loose sheet of paper per group Share with your group what you found out about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 or 1968. Take notes about the Act you did not research.

Brainstorm Research topics Historical/PoliticalCulturalSocial 1930s1930s 1960s1960s

Groups of 3 As a group, decide on a topic and sign up for it on the chart. Once you have signed up for a topic, generate at least three solid research questions to guide your investigation (your Essential questions): – A question that explores the subject- “What is/was ___” – A question that explores a cause- “What factors influenced the life of African Americans in Alabama in the 1960s?” – A question that explores an effect by evaluating the change- “How did the _____ help change anti-segregation laws.”

Assign Each group member is responsible for one of the 3 Guiding Questions. – Each group member then writes additional research questions to help guide his/her research on the main guiding question.

Research Proposal As a group, create a research proposal on a separate sheet of paper. Group member names Subject of your investigation. Your 3 essential questions- and who they are assigned to. Information you already know related to your topic, and information you will need to find in order to present a comprehensive understanding of your topic.

Tomorrow is Research Day in the library For tomorrow, you will be bringing notecards to help organize your research. Each note card is for a different source. On the front of the notecard you will put the citation for the source (Article title, author, location of source, page numbers, web address, date of publication, etc). The back of the note card will be for your notes- direct quotes you want to use, paraphrases of important details, etc. These will become your reference cards, so when you are organizing your presentation, you have a quick source to go back and get more specific information as needed.
