Comparing and Ordering Whole Numbers and Decimals

Bell Ringer: Page 7 in JBHM binder (DOK 1)

Introduction/Focus: We will be ordering whole numbers today. Why is there a need to put numbers in order? Did you know that seniors when they graduate must have their GPAs put in order to determine how they will be seated at graduation?

Guided Practice: (DOK 1 and 2) Ordering Whole Numbers: Ordering numbers involves comparing more than two numbers and then putting them in ascending or descending order. Tell students that “ascending” means from least to greatest and “descending” means from greatest to least.

Example: Write the following numbers in ascending order or from least to greatest. 9,345,295 9,245,987 9,246,987 Remember that ascending means from least to greatest.

Example: Write the following numbers in ascending (least to greatest) order. 9,999,999 9,999,000 9,999,001

Example: Write the following numbers in descending (greatest to least) order. 9,899,345 9,890,345 9,900,345

Independent Work/Activity: Ordering Activity Groups of four. 1 sheet of blank paper. Write a nine-digit number of your choice on the paper and immediately turn it over on your desk. When I say “go,” you must work together to place yourselves either in ascending or descending order. Each team then passes its numbers to another group, and the teams must work again to order themselves correctly.

Closure: 453,654 453,564 435,564 Order these numbers from least to greatest.

Homework: Make a list of 10 different seven-digit numbers. Write the numbers in both ascending and descending order.
