Do Now Are there things that scared you when you were younger that still terrify you today? Even if they are unrealistic? Answer in notebooks in 2-3 sentences.

Agenda and Objective Agenda Do now Agenda and Objective A Separate Peace background Chapter 1 Final assignments Exit Objective Students will closely read the beginning of Chapter 1 of A Separate Peace in order to establish how the author’s choice of setting and point of view manipulate our understanding of character.

BACKGROUND OF THE NOVEL

A Separate Peace by John Knowles John Knowles was born in 1926 in Fairmont, West Virginia. He left home at fifteen to attend Phillips Exeter Academy, an exclusive boarding school located in New Hampshire. After graduating from Exeter in 1945, he spent eight months as an Air Force cadet before enrolling at Yale University, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1949. Worked freelance as a writer for 7 years after the war. The plot and setting of A Separate Peace were largely inspired by Knowles’s experiences at Exeter. However, the experiences in the book were not factual accounts of what happened to him while at the school.

As we read… Consider STRUCTURE… when is the story taking place? How does the structure of the story affect our reading? Consider POINT OF VIEW… who is the story told by? How does this work with structure to make an impact?

PARTNER ASSIGNMENTS

Chapter Partner Presentations OBJECTIVE For our final novel of the year, you will combine your knowledge of literary devices, lenses, close-reading, evidence analysis, writing and public speaking in order to create a presentation of your findings and “teach” the class about one chapter from John Knowles’ A Separate Peace. RATIONALE The true mark of learning is being able to teach what you’ve learned to someone else. This assignment will be an assessment of all that you have learned in my class this year. ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS With a partner of YOUR CHOOSING, you must create a visual presentation about your chapter and produce a worksheet that will be provided to and completed by your peers during class time.

Requirements to Fulfill: Use of visual aid - this will provide your classmates with a visual anchor and a model to learn from. Options include: Prezi, PowerPoint, YouTube video, Animoto, iMovie, Screenflow, StoryBoardThat or something of your choosing (has to be cleared with me beforehand). Within the visual aid you must: highlight key plot events (no more than FOUR) Read the chapter through TWO lenses of your choice (characterization, theme, word choice/mood, figurative language, writing style/structure) and provide evidence and analysis of each. Integrate the definitions of 4-5 vocabulary words from your chapter

Requirements… Create a worksheet (1-2 pages) - this will provide your classmates the opportunity to put into practice their skills of close reading and analysis. Within the worksheet you must: Input the paragraphs of the other three lenses not analyzed in your presentation so that the students can read through and analyze the lenses. Have students respond to a question related to that lens (you should look back on previous assignments for question options). Generate general class discussion questions - this will give you the opportunity to ask questions throughout the class period and interact more fully with your peers. 3-4 discussion questions PER pair

Requirements… Prepare a feedback form - we can never grow and improve if we don’t seek feedback. Form must have at least FIVE questions on it related to your presentation and your worksheet Be ready to go on the day your presentation is due - being prepared is a life skill you will need regardless of the career path you choose. You and your partner should be prepared to utilize the ENTIRE class period. You need to budget your time wisely. Please make sure you submit your worksheet to me the DAY BEFORE your presentation to that I can print everything out. If you do not submit your worksheet at least the day before, you must print out enough copies for the class (no, do not ask to go to the library at start of class).

FINAL NOTE THERE WILL BE NO CLASS TIME GIVEN TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT.

Exit Ticket How might a change in the structure or point of view change our understanding of the text? What other text that we’ve read starts with a similar point of view and structure?
