4 Limits to Cell Size -Bigger cells have more needs -DNA doesn’t grow with the cell -DNA must work harder to meet the cell’s needs -This is known as an ‘information crisis’ -Similar to one library in a big city

5 Limits to Cell Size -Exchange of material -Bigger cells have hard time getting nutrients and removing waste -Smaller cells can interact better with their environment -Similar to a small highway in a big city

6 Cell Division -Cells divide and produces two ‘daughter cells’ -Why divide? -Solves problems related to cell size -Growth and development -Repair and maintenance -Reproduction

7 Cell Division and Reproduction -Cell division can be a form of reproduction -Asexual Reproduction -Is the production of genetically identical offspring from a single parent

8 Cell Division and Reproduction -Sexual reproduction -Is when offspring inherit some of their genetic information from each parent -Offspring are produced by the fusion of special reproductive cells produced by each of two parents

9 Comparing Asexual and Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction -Quick (can take 20 minutes) -All offspring can be identical -Requires one individual Sexual Reproduction -Slow (can take years) -All offspring are genetically unique - Requires a mate
